Vedeberg Castle, Dutch-Java's architectural grandeur building as an important part of the birth of Yogyakarta

In the beginning, Vredeburg castle built for central of administration and defense Netherlands's resident. This castle has a square shape and has four towers monitor in each corner. The existence of this building is closely related to Giyanti treaty in February, 13th 1755. This building built as request of the Netherlands to the Yogyakarta's king of Keraton at that time (Sri Sultan Hamengku Bowono I). Actually, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono has built a simple square castle where is available a guard in each corner. Sultan gave name to the four corners of the castle as Jayawisesa (northwest corner), Jayapurusa (northeast corner), Jayaprakosningprang (southwest corner) and Jayaprayitne (southeast corner).

The Netherlands considers that the building was too modest, so the castle was made into a more permanent building for keep more secure. Then, the construction of the castle is done by an expert  building from Netherlands who often called by Ir. Frans Haak. At first, its castle was named "Rustenburg" taken from Dutch which means castle resting. In the 1867, Yogyakarta suffered very severe earthquake that made the fortress was damaged badly. The ruined castle were been renovation then given a new name that is Vredeburg.

The long history that occurs in this building then ended in 1992, where the building is used as a museum by Indonesian education minister at that time. The building is still preserved today and becomes one of destination object tourism in Yogyakarta. Historical value contained in these buildings makes appeal for tourists, magnificent building which was built in the 18th century. This building not only has an attractive exterior but also there are dioramas of Indonesian for struggle in the fight their rights. Antique relic from Dutch and Japanese governments in Indonesia are also many here. Up until now the building is often visited by many tourists, the entry fee is very cheap that is IRD 2000 or USD 0.2. There is also be found a cafeteria which has an Hindia-Dutch atmosphere, this cafeteria was built in 2012. This Location is near enough from center town, that is in Malioboro Street. From Adi Sucipto's airport needs about 45 minutes by bus to go there.
